Dia de los Muertos at Old Town, San Diego

On November 2nd, I headed over to Old Town San Diego to walk around and take in the celebration of Dia de los Muertos. This celebration takes place on Nov. 1 and 2, and honors the deceased.  Some traditions believe that the veil is thinnest between the worlds during this time.  So this day is called The Day of the Dead.  Altars are placed around Old Town, some in front of stores, some in the plazas, some in restaurants, some inside the old historic buildings and one in the old cemetery.

Here are some photos I took of various altars. You can click on a photo to enlarge it.

Here is one for Adam West, the TV Batman. All photos by Katelon T. Jeffereys.

Here is one where visitors were invited to take a blank colored wooden stick and write the name of a deceased loved one and place it in the altar.

Most altars included skulls, photos of loved ones, flowers, items that represented the deceased, and treats for the deceased.

Also, placed around Old Town were many elegantly attired skeletons.  Here is one lovely “lady”.

There were several people there that would paint your whole face or half a face with the skull decoration.  Several groups were performing music and dances.  On the evening of the 2nd, there was a procession that visited several of the altars and ended at the cemetery.

Hope you enjoyed the little tour of Old Town.  Here is the website that lists events, history, and various businesses.    http://www.oldtownsandiego.org/
