Moonlight State Beach, Encinitas, CA Trip #3

I went to Moonlight Beach 3 times during my 3 day trip to Encinitas, CA.  It was only a 12 min. walk from where I was staying.   It’s a pretty active beach with a playground for kids, volley ball nets and games going on much of the time. There is a concession stand, a lifeguard building and lifeguard towers strung along the beach.  The beach is approached by Encinitas Blvd with parking in the neighborhood and a parking lot up above the beach to the SE of it.  Houses to the North and South of the beach have steep stairs that go down the cliffs there.  You can walk along the beach to the North and South but be careful with the tides so you don’t get trapped  by the water.

A closer look at the reflection in the water 🙂

There were several programs going on for children, on the shoreline, and on the beach. There were surfing lessons going on, too.

The volley ball courts were in full use every time I went, except for early morning.

I liked this mural next to the Lifeguard building.

In the same building of the concession stand were men’s and women’s bathrooms, with room to change as well. There were showers on the beach to wash off the sand.  I like how family and user friendly this beach is in all ways.  If you are in Encinitas, come check it out.

Self Realization Fellowship Gardens, Encinitas #2

This is a continuation of my blog post : https://katelontjeffereys.wordpress.com/2018/08/20/trip-to-encinitas-ca-1-come-along/ from my short trip to Encinitas, CA.

On my first full day there, I walked from my hotel, up on a hill at the SE corner of Vulcan Ave and Encinitas Blvd., to the Self Realization Fellowship Meditation Garden, on the south end of the Village part of Encinitas. I’d been there several times before but always enjoy the beauty, peace and restfulness of the place.

Scattered throughout the garden area are benches for resting, contemplation and/or meditation.  The gardens were planted by Yogananda, the author of “The Autobiography of a Yogi”.  He is considered a father of Yoga in the US.  In 1938, he built the first temple, situated over- looking the Pacific ocean, with large windows giving an extensive view of the water.  The temple remained into 1942 when the cliffs were beginning to erode and they had to tear it down and situate the temple elsewhere. This led him to expand and build temples in Los Angeles and San Diego.

There is an extended water element with large and smaller Koi fish.  (There might be other fish as well…I”m not a fish expert 🙂

I love the variety of green plants, palms, trees and flowering plants.

Hope you have enjoyed your time with me today!  Come check out the garden if you are in Encinitas http://www.encinitastemple.org/  They have a retreat center, services, and a bookstore/gift shop near by.

Trip to Encinitas, CA #1…Come Along!

Last week, I took a 3 day, 3 night trip to Encinitas, CA. I’d stayed there a few years ago and loved it, needed to get away, so I went….come along and see the sights!

This lovely flower arrangement spells out Encinitas, and is in front of a restaurant on the corner of Encinitas Blvd. and the coast highway, 101, that goes through the part of town called “The Village”.

This beautiful mural was on the side of the above mentioned restaurant.

I did a lot of walking, checking out stores, a few restaurants, a natural food store, walked to the Self Realization Fellowship gardens, planted by Yogananda, and down to Moonlight beach. I’ll be posting blog posts about Moonlight Beach and the gardens.

I chose to stay at the Best Western Moonlight Beach hotel and was glad I did. It had a pretty healthy, and extensive free breakfast, a pretty pool, VERY cushy bed and pillows (And I”m very picky about wanting comfy beds and pillows), and I could even see the ocean from the corner of my patio.  The hotel is up on a hill, but only a short 12 min. walk to the beach and just 1 1/2 blocks from the coast highway and the village commerce.  I walked to the gardens from there, too, even though the gardens are in the south side of the village.  The natural food store, with a great soup/salad/taco bar/hot foods offering, was only a block away, too.

To the north of the hotel, across the street, was a lovely park, with trails, a playground, covered areas with tables, and barbecues, and nice grassy areas.

Walking along the sidewalk into the village I passed these bright electrical boxes.

On the way to Moonlight state beach, I passed this magical garden.  I couldn’t figure out if it was a community thing, next to a hostel so part of that, or what. If anyone has any information, please let me know.  This Welcome Garden took up a fairly large area, 1/2 block in length. It was planted with desert plants and had hundreds of painted rocks, painted by various individuals.

Moonlight Beach, Encinitas, CA

I’ve been staying in Encinitas, CA for a short while. I came here awhile ago on the last vacation I took with my Mom, in the summer of 1997. While there we stayed in a small hotel near the beach but it was north of Moonlight beach, and involved a very steep set of stairs to get to the beach. I remember walking south though to Moonlight beach.  I also visited the gardens at the Self Realization Fellowship compound while there that time. I have posted pictures on this blog before of the gardens, with the pictures taken during a visit a month or so ago.

Locals tend to like Swami beach, south of the SRF compound as Yogananda frequented them and is honored there, but also because it is less crowded. I like Moonlight beach because it is an easy drive west on Encinitas Blvd. which becomes “B” st. and I always find parking in the neighborhood. There is a large parking area though on a hill above the beach. The beach has bathrooms, showers, a concession stand with beach rentals, picnic tables and a playground.

I recently walked to the beach and walked both north and south of the main area. The sand was sparkling with what looked like gold flecks, like real gold was shining in the sand. The picture doesn’t do it justice.  It is a lovely area and an easy walk. Come check it out!

Here is a photo of the trees on the cliffs above the beach and one of the gold in the sand.
